COVID FAQ

STUDENTS

1. What are the expectations regarding masks and face coverings?

  • Students are expected to follow the guidelines in Policy 302.8 Face Coverings in Response to COVID-19, which currently requires a face covering over the nose and mouth indoors, unless you are actively eating in an approved dining space, with roommates in assigned residence space, or alone in an office or enclosed indoor space.

2. Will I get in trouble if I am not vaccinated for COVID?

  • The COVID-19 vaccine is not required. Residents who live on campus and students who attend class on campus or participate in events on campus will be required to participate in surveillance testing on campus or provide proof of vaccination. Learn more at the university’s COVID-19 vaccines page

3. Does App State have jurisdiction off-campus?

  • Yes. The University has authority over all conduct which occurs on University premises and reserves the right to consider off-campus behavior when it is determined that the off-campus behavior is detrimental to the University and its educational mission. Behavior that occurs at any college or university may be processed under this Code in the same manner as on-campus behavior. Please see the Code of Student Conduct for more information, starting on page 7.

4. What happens if I do not comply with contact tracing?

  • If you do not return the call or speak to contact tracers, you may receive a referral to the Office of Student Conduct. In this case, the student conduct process may be initiated.

5. What happens if I am found without a mask/have too many visitors in my residence hall space/fail to comply with contact tracing/host a party off-campus?

  • The following educational sanctions may be used for students who are found responsible for violating COVID policies.

FACULTY and STAFF

1. What do I do if a student shows up to class without a face covering?

  • When a student shows up to class without a face covering, here's what we recommend:
    • Kindly remind them a face covering is required to attend.
    • Ask the student if they need a replacement face covering and direct them to the nearest resource in the building.
    • If there is a refusal to wear the face covering, you may ask the student to leave for the day's class session.
      • A student may not be removed for more than one class session at a time without a formal disciplinary process. The formal disciplinary process is initiated with a written incident report (see below).
    • After this class ends, please complete the “Report an Incident” form found at https://studentconduct.appstate.edu/ so the Office of Student Conduct can follow up with your student.
      • The following educational sanctions may be used for students who are found responsible for violating COVID policies.
    • You may call the Office of Student Conduct at 828-262-2704 if you have any questions.

2. What do I do if I see a student without a face covering in my building?

  • We recommend a kind reminder to students to pull up or put on a face covering. If they refuse, you may ask for their ID and complete the “Report an Incident” form found at https://studentconduct.appstate.edu/ so the Office of Student Conduct can follow up with your student.

3. Are students considered as "a speaker in a large group gathering" when they ask a question in class? Can they pull down or remove their mask for that purpose?

  • No, students are not exempt from the Face Covering Policy when they ask a question or present in class.
  • Students should wear a face covering while in class, regardless of vaccination status. There is no exception when speaking in class. Here is the most up to date information on face coverings:
