  • Appalachian Community Together (ACT)
    ACT is the community service clearing house for Appalachian State University. Its services provide meaningful service experiences for students through one-time service events, major ACT Events like the MLK Challenge, service-learning courses, and more.
  • Club Drugs
    Club drugs are being used by young adults at all-night dance parties such as "raves" or "trances," dance clubs, and bars. MDMA (Ecstasy), GHB, Rohypnol, ketamine, methamphetamine, and LSD are some of the club or party drugs gaining popularity. NIDA-supported research has shown that use of club drugs can cause serious health problems and, in some cases, even death. Used in combination with alcohol, these drugs can be even more dangerous.

  • Counseling Center
    The Counseling and Psychological Services Center, an office of the Division of Student Development at Appalachian State University, is part of a comprehensive program of student services. The Center has as its primary purpose the prevention of psychological difficulties and treatment of the mental health concerns of its students. The Counseling and Psychological Services Center also seeks to assist in the creation and maintenance of a university environment that will foster the well-being and personal development of its members. The Center is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services, Inc. Counselors at the Center practice under the Ethical Guidelines put forth by the American Counseling Association, the American Psychological Association, and the American College Personnel Association.

    The Equity Office at Appalachian State University is charged with managing complaints about unfair treatment based on some form of discrimination and, then, working to resolve those issues with the individuals and units involved. Providing proactive, preventive education and training programs that support and encourage an environment free from discrimination is an integral function of the Equity Office as well. As a natural extension of its mission, the Equity Office seeks to advance campus-wide endeavors that celebrate diversity and foster appreciation of differences.

    The primary purpose of the Office of Student Financial Aid is to support the mission of Appalachian State University. It accomplishes this by seeking to remove financial barriers to education for those unable to meet college costs and to assist students and families in securing the financial resources necessary to attend college.     The Mary S. Shook Student Health Services exists to meet the health needs of the students of Appalachian State University. All registered full-time students who are currently attending class are eligible to receive care at the Health Service. Students taking less than nine hours are eligible after paying the Student Health fee.

    OASIS (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information and Shelter) is a private, non-profit, volunteer organization serving Alleghany, Ashe and Watauga counties. OASIS provides services and support for victims of family violence and sexual assault. Services include a free, confidential safe home, advocacy, information and referral, support groups and educational programs.

    Ask Uncle Sigmund is an on-line mental health information service, sponsored by the Appalachian State University Counseling and Psychological Services Center. You are welcome to ask a question, or you may read questions and responses others have submitted. Uncle Sigmund omits information that might identify you in your questions. You cannot be tracked electronically, so Uncle Sigmund is not able to send a response to you personally. If you are in an emotional crisis, please do not rely on Uncle Sigmund for help; please come to the Counseling and Psychological Services Center (262-3180) on the first floor of Annas Student Services Building, down the hall from the post office. If you are in crisis and need emergency services after hours, call campus police at 262-2150 and ask to speak to a counselor.
